Translators and interpreters have long entered the literature, being initially, as a rule, secondary
characters. At the end of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first century, they became
more and more often protagonists of literary works, appearing in various roles and situations. The study
focuses on the ambivalent position inherent in this profession, but also on new aspects of the activity of
interpreters, reflected in contemporary prose, based on the novel „Daniel Stein, interpreter” of L. Ulitskaya.
