Statistical knowledge is an indispensable component of the professional competence of
specialists in the field of socio-human sciences. Statistics provides these specialists with tools and
techniques for ordering, grouping, systematizing, concentrating, or correlating empirical data.
Statistical data analysis is not a substitute for theoretical analysis, but provides a basis for testing,
analyzing and interpreting hypotheses or for systematizing the meanings inherent in social data. This
paper deals with aspects related to the design of a research approach to social phenomena,
relationships or processes, and highlights when and how the techniques of mathematical statistics
intervene in the development of this approach.
