Terminologia îşi pune bazele ca o disciplină pe parcursul reflectărilor sale asupra principiilor
şi metodelor consacrând studiul său principal, termenul. Astfel, o constelaţie de teorii şi de metode inovante au fost sugerate de cercetători ca Temmerman, care optează pentru colabordare sociocognitivă, aplicând principiile semanticii cognitive asupra ontologiilor
ştiinţelor vieţii. Cabré delimitează natura poliedică a termenului şi adoptează demersul onceptual în studiul terminologiei.
