The article presents an analysis of the current state of Machiavellianism theory in psychology, characterised by a variety of approaches and assessments. Based on the accepted definition of manipulation as a hidden control characterised by selfish motives, the conclusion about the identity of the concept of “Machiavellic” and “manipulator” is obvious. In this case, when describing the personality of a manipulator, the same characteristics are used as for a Machiavellic. Though, the dual model of understanding manipulation as “external” and “internal” presupposes the very same contradictory
manifestation of Machiavellianism in personality structure.
