The article focuses on the psychoanalytic perspective on the phenomenon of resilience, including theoretical syntheses and empirical illustrations. Two fundamental psychoanalytic approaches to resilience are highlighted - one derived from psychoanalytic drives theory, the other derived from psychoanalytic object relations theory. On the theoretical level, the definition of resilience is clarified and the resources and limits of this phenomenon are delineated. At the same time, the phenomenon of pseudo-resilience is problematized, exemplified by the mechanism of splitting. On the empirical side, the results of studies on the phenomenon of resilience in totalitarian contexts are presented. Thus, the Pitești phenomena in communist Romania, the deportations in Kalmykia, the repression of the Russian intellectuals during the stalinist period, and the stalinist deportations in the MSSR are invoked. The article highlights the individual’s ability to make use of spiritual, community and cultural resources in traumatic situations caused by totalitarian systems.
