Cronicile medievale reprezentau un gen literar specific, adaptat înregistrării sistematice a evenimentelor. În manuscrisele slavo-române din sec. XV-XVI, cronicile purtau diverse titluri, inclusiv denumiri specifice pentru scrierile religioase. Naraţiunile istorice erau copiate alături de predici, vieţi ale sfinţilor, povestiri despre minuni
şi apocrife. Trecutul uman putea fi evocat şi ca povestire, pildă sau legendă. Titlurile cronicilor, cuvintele-cheie cu care le denumeau autorii indicau statutul literaral operelor istorice şi locul lor între preocupările publicului medieval.

Slavonic-Romanian manuscripts dating from the XV-XVI th c.
chronicles bore different titles, including ones specific
for religious writings. The historical narr
atives were copied along with preaches,
lives of saints, stories about miracles and apocrypha. The human past could also be evoked as a story, a parable or a legend. The titles of chronicles, the key-terms their authors referred to them, indicated the literary status of historical writings and their place among the interests of medieval people.
